When we immigrated from South Africa in 1991, we left behind our two German Shepherds and our Maltese poodle. The big dogs went to a co worker who had a large property and we drove 14+ hours to Cape Town to give the little guy to my aunt. Prior to Alzheimer’s, the day we left those dogs, was the only time I had ever seen Rob cry. I walk each week with Allie and most Fridays, Rob accompanies us. Yesterday, however, he was visibly upset and I finally figured out that he thought we were “leaving” the dogs (again). He was crying and trying to choose between going with me and abandoning his pets. Ultimately, he chose Nonna Biba and the girls, but the emotions far exceeded the immigration loss. #alzheimerssucks #endalzoc
